Atlanta Eats

Any time I go back to Atlanta I'm always torn between trying one of the numerous new and exciting gastronomical establishments or going back to an old favorite.  This week, in the interest of time (I was there for only 24 hours), the latter won out.

Tuesday night we had a quick and tasty dinner at Bistro Niko.  The ease and convience of this Buckhead restaurant make it a great place to grab dinner after a day of travel and shopping.  Plus, I had Marian with me, so I needed someplace that was kid-friendly.  We started with the Gourgeres, which are like eating a little cheesy cloud.  My mom had the chicken with roasted mushrooms on swiss chard and a rosemary garlic sauce, while I had the white bean soup with white truffle oil and the classic steak tartare.  We were both very happy!

Wednesday morning we hit one of my favorite spots in Atlanta, Star Provisions.  It is the market in front of the famous Bacchanalia.  I love the bakery, the deli and the cheese counter, and the meats are almost look too pretty to eat.  This week I picked up three cheeses (Wabash Cannonball, Tallegio and Margie - see pictures below for more info) that did not disappoint as well as some sweet treats for kids.

This is the Wabash Cannonball, which is an ash-covered goat cheese.  I'm a big fan of this style of goat cheese (Selles-sur-cher is my favorite), and the name tugged of at the heartstrings of the Roy Acuff fan in me. The skin is thin.  The center dense and crumbly.  The name is cool.  The taste is spot on!

The Tallegio is an Italian cows' milk cheese with a thin skin and a semi-soft interior.  I like to eat this one completely by itself - no bread, no crackers.

The Margie really showcases the flavors of the grass-fed cows' milk.  It has a firm rind and a smooth, creamy center.

I'm so jealous of your girls trip to Atlanta. I lived in Buckhead for two years and miss it so much and my Mom and I used to take a girls shopping trip up there once a year too!! I love it. Glad you fit in some fab meals in between shopping!! xoxo
