Summer Road Trippin'

One of my favorite things to do on a road trip is find a good restaurant.  I know that sounds crazy since interstates are dotted with fast food drive-thrus and the occasional Cracker Barrel, but often, there is something special just a couple minutes away if you know what your looking for.  Scott has learned to just grin and bear it (sort of) while I call out directions to an obscure BBQ joint, Mexican hole-in-the-wall or local dive.  Once I get us where we going, he's usually pretty happy with the results.  He still talks about the deep-fried cornbread at Big Fatty's in Knoxville, TN, even though he cursed me through every wrong turn we took trying to get there.

I took my mom and Marian on one of my excursions as we headed to Atlanta last week.  We couldn't leave until late in the day, and we planned to stop along the way to spend the night, so I thought that was a perfect excuse to try a new restaurant.  After a little research, a good friend from Montgomery reported that she had heard great things about Acre in Auburn so we made that our destination.

I can't say that Acre was one of my favorite places I've ever been, but overall it was a good experience.  I really liked the decor even though the lighting in the dining area was too bright.  If we hadn't had Marian with us, I would have asked to sit at the bar.  It was so cool with better lighting, lots of exposed brick and industrial fixtures.  The food was good, and the servers were really nice and attentive.  I'm so glad we gave it a try, and if I'm ever in Auburn again, I would go back.  However, I'm not sure that I'll make a special trip off the interstate next time.

Hope you enjoy your summer road trip, and don't be afraid to travel off the beaten path for something a little special!

Acre bread board with rosemary butter, pimento cheese and sorghum-bacon butter was a favorite.  I could have made a meal out of this!

Salt-roasted beets were delicious

Corn and sausage tamale was a small-plate special that I made into my entree

Mississippi Redfish on the "half shell" - very nice sauce, but the fish was a little overcooked

Gilled cheese and fries off the kid's menu was a success
