NYC & The Whitney Museum

I just returned from a long overdue trip to NYC to visit my college roomie, Tahoe roomie, European vacation, cross country traveling, maid of honor and godmother to Sally.  We both had big birthdays last summer and were determined to get together to celebrate.  Well, it finally happened. We packed so much into a long weekend and had an unbelievable time.

Today, I am sharing some details about our trip the the new Whitney Museum at 99 Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District.  We walked the High Line for a while and then went to the Whitney for a few hours of culture.

The new Whitney Museum in New York City is situated between the High Line and the Hudson River.  Designed by Renzo Piano, the building is stunning outside as well as in.  There is an interior staircase with floor to ceiling glass to maximize views of the Hudson.  On the opposite side of the building, an exterior staircase provides amazing views of the Hudson, the Meatpacking District, and Freedom Tower with Lady Liberty in the distance.  There is a restaurant on the first floor and an indoor/outdoor cafĂ© on the eighth (great photo op).

The Archibald Motley exhibition was captivating.  Motley was a Jazz Age Modernist who first came to be known in 1920s, the early years of the Harlem Renaissance.  Admittedly, I was not familiar with Motley before viewing this exhibition but I was completely taken with his work and the stories behind his paintings.  Through his art, Motley aimed to educate us on skin color and racial identity.  In other words, get to know the person and look past the color of his or her skin.
Click here to read more about Archibald Motley and to view works from this exhibition.

Be sure to check back later in the week for more on my belated birthday celebration with my favorite NYC girl.  We had a blast celebrating our birthdays!
I promise, it was NOT all culture and art!
