WMTH Travels: Asheville, North Carolina

For the past several weeks I feel like I've been burning up the interstates between Pensacola and North Carolina.  I dropped one boy at camp outside Brevard, North Carolina, took one boy to spend time with my aunt in Raleigh, and then picked everyone up again two weeks later with Marian along for the ride.  Both on the front-end and the back-end of my journey, I got to spend a little time in the Old North State.

North Carolina holds a special place in my heart.  It is not only where I went to college but also where my grandparents lived when I was growing up.  They retired to the mountains long before I was born, and I was fortunate to spend many happy days hiking the mountains near their house, visiting the farm on Warren Wilson College campus and wandering the through the shops in Biltmore Village.  After dropping Hudson at Camp High Rocks, my mom and I headed to Asheville with the two little ones for lunch and some time on the farm.  Everything was just as I remembered.  Biltmore Village was bustling (and is now packed with even better shops), and the farm was just as enchanting as it was when I was little.  The only thing missing was my grandparents.  I would give anything to have my children spend time with them at their house overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I know they would have loved each other so.

Lunch at the Corner Kitchen in Bilmore Village was delicious.  If you decide to try it, be sure to make a reservation.  Without one, the wait time can be up to two hours.  I opted for the BBQ brisket sandwich (pictured top right) with a side of pea salad (I have this weird obsession with pea salad).  Top left is the Club Sandwich.  Bottom left is the Cool Grilled Chicken Salad.  Bottom right, and the winner in my opinion, is the Carolina Cobb Salad.

All I wanted was one picture of the three of us, but, as usual, that proved harder than one would think!

  1. I spent a wonderful week in North Carolina a few years ago so I enjoyed your pictures. Not your typical tourist pics.
Very humorous. And your children are beautiful!
