Food, Family & Fireworks

Traci and I just returned from several days in Seaside, FL, with our families.  The town was full of energy and excitement surrounding New Year's Eve, and it was a great getaway after the craziness of Christmas.  The kids played in the yard, rode bikes and watched movies, and the adults just enjoyed hanging out with each other.  This is not the first time we have all spent New Year's Eve at Seaside.  It's a great place for us all to be together and not have to worry about finding a babysitter, because we usually cook a big meal at home and then watch the fireworks at midnight in the tower.

All in all, it was a great time, and the crowning achievement was the delicious dinner we cooked.  Traci and I talked about going traditional with a beef tenderloin, but we've done that before so we decided to change it up.  Instead, we made Momofuko's bo ssam, a Korean recipe of slow-cooked Boston butt.  I got the idea from a family friend who said he was going to make it after reading a New York Times article about it.  The recipe was really simple, and the only deviation we made was that we cooked it on the Big Green Egg instead of in the oven.  We made the ginger-scallion sauce and ssam sauce, but we skipped the oysters and bought the Kimchi from a local Asian market.  Because I have an obsession with Brussels sprouts lately, and because I wanted to recreate some I had in Nashville, we made some Asian Brussels sprouts, and they were the perfect side.  The fireworks at midnight were the perfect end to 2014!  Here's to the new year!

    1. Thanks, Biana! We had so much fun that we are all sick now. Ugh! Hope you had a nice New Year's Eve. I loved the shot with the skyline in the background, and I'm dying to try the Meatball Shop.
